We all tend to sit around too much, and our kids are no exception. With homeschooling my kids, many of our school activities seem to revolve around sitting, whether we’re reading, doing workbooks, or working on the tablet.
I set a time limit, and then I make sure that we all get up and move around. The activity depends on the energy level we all have, but we find that we all feel better once we move around. The key seems to be in an activity that isn’t always blatant exercise. Here are some ideas for getting your kids up and moving.
Going for walks
On days when the temperature is either too hot or too cold, we skip this one, but on the other days, it is an excellent way for all of us to get outside and burn off some energy. We usually take a quick walk around the neighborhood, which is less than a mile. Since my son is small yet, he can only sometimes walk the entire way. I bring the stroller with us in case he needs help getting back. He’s too heavy for me to carry him! It also gets us some fresh air, which makes us feel better.
Dance parties
I’m a big fan of having music on in the background during school time or doing chores, so this time is great for an impromptu dance party. It is fun and gets everyone moving. I will sometimes let my kids pick songs to help them feel more engaged.
Send them outside
My kids are at the age where I can send them outside and trust them to stay in the backyard. If the weather is nice and they complain too much about going for a walk, I’ll send them out to play and knock out some work inside.
YouTube Videos
YouTube is great for finding certain songs for dancing. You can also find a bunch of kid workouts, from yoga to stretching to martial arts. Even if my kids don’t like the idea of working out, they can usually find something that they enjoy.
Chase Game
Sometimes my kids will chase each other around the house. If I want to encourage it, I’ll join in and pretend to be a wolf chasing them.
Balloons
Keeping the balloon off the ground is a fun game that gets your kids up and moving. I have a whole bag and will let them each pick a color. Then, we see who can keep their balloon in the air the longest.
Indoor workout equipment
Depending on their age, you can have your kids use some of the workout equipment that you have. My 6-year-old can lift a kettlebell and use the rowing machine. We also have a kid trampoline for my son to jump on.
Build a fort
Kids love forts, so building them is a great way to get them up and moving around. Give them some chairs and blankets, and they’ll do the rest. Plus, it gives them a place to play for a while afterward.
Household chores
Another great way to get everyone moving is by doing chores together. You’ll also get things done faster. Helping with dishes or folding and putting away laundry is an excellent way to move around.
Workout together
The most significant way to encourage kids to exercise is by being a good example. When you participate in the activities above with your kids, they will want to do them with you. Make sure you get your workout in; they will see how you prioritize it.
Teaching kids about moving around is important. While they instinctually play, they can fall into the trap of screens just like the rest of us. When you show them how to balance it all and that it makes them feel better, you are encouraging them for the future.
