How long do sunburns last?

How long a sunburn lasts really depends on the severity. Most mild sunburns will resolve in about a week, however if a severe second or third degree burn is sustained it may take up to 2 weeks to heal. Sun protection is so important for pediatric patients because children’s skin cells are more prone to damage compared with adults. A blistering sunburn can increase a child’s risk of melanoma dramatically in adulthood by altering DNA at the cellular level.  A really bad burn or insult to the skin in a pediatric patient can have reverberations well into their future.

I like to recommend a hypoallergenic, mineral-based sunscreen regularly applied every 2-3 hours during sun exposure and avoiding peak daylight hours of 10am-2pm where the UV index is the highest. Other types of sun protection, such as clothing, use of a wide-brimmed hat are essential for protection.

The use of lotion that contains aloe vera can help soothe sunburnt skin. Avoid popping any blisters or applying ice to the burn as this may lead to more damage to already delicate tissue. Ibuprofen, when taken as directed, can help to soothe inflammation and ease pain. Stay hydrated with plenty of electrolyte-rich fluids as sunburns lead to more fluid loss at the surface of the skin.
