When is baby spit up a sign of a more serious issue?

Most babies spit up at least a little. But if your baby is spitting up more often than you think they should – or if the action is more dramatic than you think it should be, it might be time to explore other possibilities.

Every time I feed my 4-month-old son out of a bottle he spits up everywhere. It has gotten so bad I burp him over the sink because it flies out of his mouth. I have tried all different types of bottles but nothing helps. Do you think this may be a sign of a more serious problem?

Oh my goodness this must be disconcerting. At least you’ve figured out how to manage the laundry issue. Seriously though, I’d love to answer this question but there is so much more detail that I need to attempt it. For instance, the way you worded the question makes me think your son does not regularly get a bottle. Is he primarily breastfed? If yes, does he spit up after nursing?

Also, describing spit up as flying out of his mouth sounds like projectile vomiting.

I would suggest you start by contacting your pediatrician and ask if there is a feeding specialist you can take your son to see in your area. Hopefully the issue is as simple as using a different technique such as paced feeding when bottle-feeding your little one. Please keep us posted.
